At Minority Womyn in Action, we bear witness to queer individuals continuously crafting and shaping a world full of possibilities amidst daunting challenges. From limited resources and pervasive discrimination spanning from familial environments to workplaces to the impact of restrictive laws and stifling social, economic, and religious contexts in Kenya. Through Freedom Dreams photo book, we inquire into the personal lives of Kenyan queer folk, capturing overarching themes; what kinds of futures they are imagining and creating together, what challenges they face, what mechanisms sustain their current challenges, and the potential for changing the narratives of discrimination they face. The insights give us a compass to where we are, where we are going, and how we are going to get there.
As we immerse ourselves in these pages, we confront not only the beauty but a commitment to being alive, to exist, to resist, and what it means to live a counter-life challenging the intersecting oppressions faced by queer folks.
